It’s the day of the funeral. And you’re in shock. Sure, you had some warning, but nothing could have prepared you for this. It takes all your effort, but you manage to get yourself dressed and out of the house. Now, here you are, walking into the room, grief hanging thick and heavy in the air.

You take a seat and look around at all the mourners – you’re touched by how many people’s lives your loved one had an impact on. You greet each one as they pass, unsure what to say. And then you watch as the funeral director closes the lid on the casket, marking the last time you’ll ever see your person.

Later that night, you lay in bed, crying, devastated. You’re not sure how you’ll make it through the next few moments, let alone the next hour, day, week, or year. This loneliness is overwhelming in a way that you’ve never experienced.

You’re sitting in the doctor’s office. “This doesn’t make any sense,” you think to yourself. “I’ve always been in perfect health.” You’ve been more tired recently, but you chalked it up to being Vitamin D deficient (like lots of Oregonians).

Honestly, you’re not even sure why you’re there. You got a voicemail from the nurse telling you to schedule an appointment. So here you are, listening to the doctor but having trouble making sense of the words. Finally, you’re able to speak. “I can’t have cancer.”

Your mind begins to race with a thousand different questions at once. “Will I need to take time off work? Who will pick up the kids from school? Will I lose my hair? How will people react when I tell them?” And then, the hardest question of all, “Am I going to die?” Fear and sadness grip your heart.

It was a night like any other. You did your usual walk through the house – locking the door, closing windows, making sure everything was secure – and nothing was out of the ordinary. You went to bed and soon drifted off to sleep.

The next thing you know, you wake up coughing. Something seemed wrong, but you couldn’t quite place it. As you closed your eyes again to try to fall back asleep, that’s when the fire alarms went off. At once, it’s all chaos as your adrenaline kicks in, and you move on autopilot.

The next thing you know, you’re standing outside on the street. Fire trucks and police cars take up the whole block, and neighbors in pajamas huddle together to watch the blaze. And you stand there as your house – the house you grew up in, the only one you’ve ever known – and everything in it burns.

You try to avoid thinking about it

It’s natural to want to suppress your grief, but ignoring it just leads to more numbness, anxiety, and fear.

The longer you spend hiding, the worse you will feel and the harder it will be to move forward.
